Choosing a cabin on the Venice Simplon Orient Express

The Venice Simplon Orient Express has been running since the 1920’s when the train was one of the first to pioneer the golden age of train travel. Let the countryside pass you by while relaxing in style.

The Venice Simplon Orient Express oozes charm and it has been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning marquetry and attention to detail. All carriages have different details such as foldable brass candle holders, upholstery and marquetry design and special hooks to hang and protect pocket watches.

Carriage 3309 is the oldest carriage, built in 1926 in Belgium and famously stuck in a snow drift for 10 days in 1929 inspiring the renowned movie Murder on the Orient Express. Sleeping carriage 3425 is associated with King Carol who escaped Romania with his mistress in 1940, whilst sleeping carriage 3544 was used as a wartime brothel!

The Orient Express has three levels of cabin. The first is the Double Cabin which comes with a lounge, banquette sofa and a washbasin which is hidden in a cupboard. By night it is transformed into a bedroom with an upper and lower bed.

The second is the Cabin Suite which consists of two interconnecting cabins. One room can be kept as a lounge for the day with the second room having an upper and lower berth. Alternatively each can be made into two single beds at night; one in each room.

Double Cabin and Cabin Suite

These cabins have been faithfully restored to their original splendour with the modern addition of air conditioning and wifi. (Though the wifi can be quite patchy and we would recommend instead you pack away your laptops and phones and instead relax into the genteel pace of living on a train). For both of these cabin levels the loo is a communal loo situated at the end of the carriageway.

The third cabin option is the Grand Suite which features a double/twin bedroom, living area with space for private dining and a sofa which can be converted into an additional bed in the evening. A private en-suite bathroom includes shower, washbasin and toilet. Enjoy the celebrated 24-hour cabin service complemented by free-flowing champagne in your own cabin.

These stunning Grand Suite cabins are a modern addition replacing 3 standard cabins and so do not replicate the original train. Don’t let that put you off though as they are breathtakingly beautiful, created painstakingly the same original style with an even higher level of marquetry and attention to detail. The space and the en suite bathroom makes these very popular and they book up fast.

The train also has fine dining with not two but three restaurant cars. The first is the Cote d’Azure with blue opaque glass classical figures. The second is the Etoile du Nord with fantastic marquetry, and the last is L’Oriental which is stylised in black lacquer panels.

Whichever cabin level you decide the service is impeccable with a steward assigned to each carriage who can be requested purely by a press of a button in your cabin day or night. Champagne, Afternoon tea and Breakfast will all be served in your cabin by your steward. A Venice Simplon Orient Express trip really is a Once in a Lifetime experience.
