What to Pack on a Venice Simplon Orient Express holiday

“Overdressed” is not a word that you should use in association with a Venice Simplon Orient Express Trip! This occasion deserves dressing up for; Experience luxury historic travel as during the 1920s when “casual” had never been heard of by the upper classes!

On a Venice Simplon Orient Express package your luggage travels separately to you so all that you take into your cabin with you is an overnight bag and a suit/ dress bag. There really is not much room for suitcases and you will want to relax in comfort your cabin and not feel crammed in.

So, the requirement is smart casual for the day time and so no sneakers/ trainers or denim please. For the daytime the gentlemen will need casual trousers and a shirt, whilst the ladies are asked to wear dresses, skirts or smart trousers.

Your cabin has an inbuilt washbasin with mirror, discreetly hidden behind a marquetry cupboard and various indulgent potions are available for your use.

There are separate loos at the end of each carriage which are spacious and so we would recommend you take a dressing gown and slippers to avoid any awkward encounters in the middle of the night if you need to pop out to one.

The stunning Grand suites do have en-suite bathrooms with their own shower and loo if you upgrade to those, but as there are not many of them they book up incredibly fast.

So on a Venice Simplon Orient Express trip you should definitely dress up for dinner in your glad rags being an important part of the Venice Simplon Orient Express experience. You will find that there are flapper dresses on show, very smart cocktail dresses and long evening bejewelled gowns.

The gentlemen are asked to wear as a minimum a dark suit, but you will spot many black ties, some of the brighter more cheeky bow ties along with the dapper dandies dressed from the 1920s.

We would suggest you avoid high heels though as you are walking on a moving train which can occasionally jolt and we don’t want you to stumble and hurt your ankle.

You will agree with the Maitre D when you join the Venice Simplon Orient Express which dinner sitting you are joining.

When it is time for your dinner sitting you will find it to be an unrushed relaxed dining experience with wonderful offerings created from scratch with the finest freshest ingredients in their very small kitchen.

You will be offered a four course dinner ending with regional cheeses and chutneys and lovely crackers. You will be offered wines to compliment your dinner which are payable locally, the waiters are very experienced in matching wines to food on the Venice Simplon Orient Express.

When you book your Venice Simplon Orient Express holiday you will be asked for any allergies information or dietary needs which the staff will be aware of and they are super careful to adhere to those.

Sit and eat enjoying the ambience of your chosen dining carriage – there are 3 to choose from so you can truly enjoy the atmosphere and recreated era on your Venice Simplon Orient Express package holiday.
