Things to do when in Naples

Why Naples San Carlo Opera?

When you think of a Sorrento or Amalfi holiday, you are likely to overlook Naples and this is a shame. Naples boasts some wonderful sites but also the stunningly beautiful Teatro San Carlo Opera House. With the exception of August, you can enjoy either the opera or ballet every month of the year, whether you are looking at popular well-loved classics, or more opera connoisseur options. Sometimes the venue is half of the experience and with Teatro San Carlo, this is certainly true!

What to do on your Naples Opera Breaks

Naples is a rich city with plenty to keep you busy for at least a few days and even when you have a break from sightseeing, you still have the incredible views over the harbour to entertain you. As well as this, Naples boasts the very best Archaeological Museum where relics from the remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum are kept.

You also have the option of Palazzo Reale and two Castles; Castel dell’Ovo and Castel Nuovo, both of which are on the harbour front and close to your hotel and San Carlo Opera house.

Then you still have Gallerio Umberto I and various churches and the Duomo to explore, all within an easy walking distance of your hotel.

Our Top Tip?

Take the funicular up to Castel Sant’Elmo and after enjoying the castle, indulge in a coffee break which affords the best photo opportunities of The Bay of Naples.

Why we love Grand Hotel Santa Lucia and Hotel Romeo

Grand Hotel Santa Lucia is a 4 star hotel located right on the waterfront with views over The Bay of Naples. It is very close to the Palazzo Reale, Teatro San Carlo Opera House, and looks towards Castel dell’Ovo.

This impress Art Nouvau hotel has a rooftop terrace looking out over the harbour and castle, and provides the very finest Neopolitan dishes and superb wine from their own wine cellar.

Hotel Romeo is for those wanting a 5 star art design hotel. Located just along from Grand Hotel Santa Lucia, it also affords stunning views over the harbour and Mount Vesuvius, but as well as the view, you also have the use of a full spa and wellness facilities, a gym and two restaurants.

Choose from The Beluga Lounge Bar and Terrace for outdoor dining or Il Comandante for Michelin Starred dining. Begin each day with your Nespresso coffee machine in your room and your favourite newspaper delivered direct to your door.

Weather

As Naples is an all year round destination, the temperature can change quite considerably, however, the climate in Naples even in winter only dips to around 6c, with autumn and spring being around 14c and summer 31c, although as with any Italian city, the humidity will make this feel hotter.

Packing List

If travelling in winter then layers and coat with a hood are advised. If in autumn and spring, a lighter coat in case of the odd wet day. In summer, the usual summer clothing is recommended, however, please note if you are intent on visiting any religious sites like churches for example, you will need to cover up knees and upper arms, or you might be refused admittance. Rucksacks are not advised in museums, but cross over body bags or shoulder handbags are better, so you can keep your possessions close to you.
