Italy Opera Venue Choices

A trip to the Italian opera can actually be quite confusing as there is quite a bit to choose from in regards to whether to go with an outdoor summer venue or a stunning opera house, and that’s before you decide from a plethora of operas on the schedules. This blog should help you clearly sort through your main options.

Outdoor Arena vs Opera House

An outdoor arena has the added benefit of being summer only travel, which is perfect for combining sun and culture. It also leads to some fantastic scenery. In Verona the outdoor summer festival runs from mid June to early September and takes place in the second biggest Roman arena in Italy. (The first of course being the Colosseum in Rome!) Every summer the arena showcases some of the most well-loved operas in existence. Verona is perfect for some time on nearby Lake Garda to escape the city and unwind for a few days.

Similarly, in Lucca the Puccini Opera Festival takes place from mid-July to mid-August each year and overlooks Torre del Lago; the picturesque lake as a backdrop. Operas by Puccini always contain Madame Butterfly and La Boheme as well as many others.

However, opera need not be summer only and that is where an opera house can be a great idea. La Scala in Milan is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, and with an 11 month schedule, there is always something to see in the beautiful opera house. Choose from well-known classics to rare operas for the real connoisseurs. Combined with a stay on either Lake Maggiore or Lake Como, and like Verona, you have the perfect break for everyone.

Alternatively La Fenice Opera House in Venice also offers an impressive list of operas most months of the year. With a stunning gold cherub-enthused design, you will be in love with the opera house before the lights go down and the opera begins!

Please note for all opera experiences, we use the best seats in the house/arena. Whilst we also offer lower ticket level seating for those that request it, in terms of the opera houses, many of the lower level seating offer a restricted view. For Lucca the lower ticketing would mean being seated further back, and for Verona, raised up on stone steps, which, whilst authentic, can be a challenge on the body!
