Every summer the Puccini Festival plays well known operas on the Torre del Lago just outside of Viareggio in Italy. The open-air arena is located in idyllic surroundings overlooking the lake. The season begins from mid-July and ends around mid-August time. For 2018 the choice of operas include Turandot, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, Manon Lescaut and Il Trittico. The arena attracts around 40,000 visitors each year who come to enjoy some of Giacomo Puccini’s most loved operas. He is buried within the villa a short distance from the lake.
The area however has much more to offer than just the opera. Viareggio is located on the west side of Italy on a beautiful sandy beach – perfect in the summer months. Around 30 minutes from Viareggio and the opera arena is the walled city of Lucca where Puccini’s museum, the Ducal and Pfanner Palaces and many other wonderful buildings are well worth a visit. If panoramic views of the town are of interest to you, then head to Guinigi Tower, located centrally in the town. Also of note is Villa Garzoni with its scenic water gardens.
When you have attended an opera at the Puccini Festival, and enjoyed a day in Lucca exploring, you have the option of other wonderful sights within easy distance. Pisa and Cinque Terre are around a 30 minutes drive, Siena several hours away, Florence around 3 hours. If you were in town mid-August than you could easily combine some time around Lucca with visiting the Siena Palio. This historical horse race takes place twice a year and is definitely one to be seen.
We have now combined a break where you have 3 nights staying in a 4 star hotel in the centre of Lucca, private airport transfers, Top level Gold seating at the Puccini Festival one night, and flights from many UK airports to Pisa return. As we know parking spaces are limited and highly in demand, we have also included private transfers for the night of your opera, so that you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.
