Villa Borghese, Rome Holiday

Having arrived on your Rome holiday and been to the Colisseum, Old Forum and of course Vatican City, you are probably wondering where next to head to. Rome has a plethora of wonderful churches and museums, but don’t overlook the Villa Borghese Gardens.

Villa Borghese houses quite a few buildings including museums and sights worth reaching for the camera! Being the third largest public park in Rome at 148 acres, there is certainly plenty to see. Gaining access to the site is possible by two entrances; the Spanish Steps and the Porte del Popolo by Pazza del Popolo.

Historically the gardens were originally a former vineyard before in 1605 Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, decided to make this what you see today. The gardens were landscaped very much in the English tastes.

In 1960 as part of the Summer Olympics the Piazza di Siena, housed within the villa, hosted the equestrian dressage and jumping events.

Things to see:

Today for a pre-booked fee you can visit the Galleria Borghese which contains the Borghese Collection including David and his Daphne and paintings by Titian, Raphael and Caravaggio.

Villa Giulia which adjoins the gardens was the summer residence of Pope Julius III, however now it holds the Etruscan Museum.

As well as these main galleries and museums is the Modern National Galleries which has a collection of 19th – 20th century Italian paintings, all of which is not to be missed on your Rome holiday.

If all of this is not enough there is a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre built as recently as 2003, a zoo and even a museum dedicated to the zoo.

Dotted around the gardens are monuments which are dedicated to greats such as George Byron, Wolfgang Goethe and Victor Hugo amongst many others. Wander through and enjoy the secret gardens, the grotto, the water clock and many other galleries.

With all these wonderful things to do and see, one thing is for sure, allow plenty of time on your Rome holiday to fully sample these beautiful gardens.
